Women's Empowerment Based Self Defense


Violence against women is an unfortunate but very real social issue in today's world irrespective of where it occurs: on the streets or at home. Self defense is not a martial art, rather in our classes we provide a set of self defense strategies based upon concepts, principles and curriculum of the IWKA Wing Tjun martial arts system in combination with the 'Fight4Fit' program. The goal is to give the life saving tools and experiences of our training which allow women to walk with more confidence and awareness knowing they have a fighting chance to protect themselves when it is needed most.

The content of the empowerment self defense courses and seminars consist of a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies in addition to physical strategies which enable a person to successfully escape, resist and survive violent encounters. The classes do not only focus on physical training as good self protection addresses the pyschological aspect of awareness. Though there are no guarantees with regards to self protection training increases the chances of success by providing options to avoid, slow down, de-escalate, interrupt, or stop attacks.

In addition to learning about increased awareness to surroundings, students learn prevention, preparation and how react and develop reflex ability in their responses in addition to vulnerable areas of the body, pressure points, basic principles about fighting including standing, grappling, and ground fighting.



Empowerment self-defense is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that enable someone to successfully prevent, escape, resist and survive violent assaults.

A good self-defense course provides psychological awareness and verbal skills, not just physical training.

Empowerment Self Defense (ESD) works.


Women trained in ESD experience fewer and less severe completed assaults and fewer attempted assaults overall (Hollander 2014).Research of 451 women on three college campuses in Canada published in the New England Journal of Medicine found a 50% reduction in unwanted sexual contact, sexual coercion, attempted rape, and completed rape (Senn 2015).

ESD increases self-confidence and self-efficacy, perceived control, assertiveness, physical competence, and disclosure. It also decreases anxiety, fear, feelings of helplessness, and perhaps more importantly, self-blame (Breklin 2008 and Hollander 2014).

We offer weekly classes, private instruction and host both seminars & workshops regarding womens self defense.
